Syron Design begins a documentary of
injection drug researchers in rural Puerto Rico

Lincoln, NE. – January 15, 2015 –  “Injection Risk Networks in Rural Puerto Rico” is funded by the National Institute for Drug Abuse (NIDA). Principal investigators, Kirk Dombrowski, Bilal Khan, and Juan Carlos Reyes.

The project investigates HIV and Hepatitis C risk among injection drug users in central rural Puerto Rico and ultimately, aims to use this research to reduce the spread of HIV and Hepatitis C in Puerto Rico by identifying effective prevention strategies. Between 2014 and 2019, the team will interview more than 600 people who inject drugs and ask them about their risk behaviors, injection risk partners, and about their lives in rural Puerto Rico. Each participant will also complete a rapid HIV and Hepatitis C test. The analytical portion of the project involves simulating risk social networks on a regional scale, and testing the simulation effects of a range of interventions.

As the Communications Director for the project, we want to capture every aspect of this significant research. We flew down to Puerto Rico to document the training of the field team. We spent two days interviewing, observing and collecting background footage that will serve as the basis for a series of documentaries about the not only the process of how to conduct a large research project project but also how collaboration between research and design can bring about social change.

Syron Academic Publishing announces our first book!

Syron Design is thrilled to announce a new subsidiary, Syron Academic Publishing. Today we are happy to announce our first book, Culture Politics by Dr. Kirk Dombrowski is available in print and on Kindle.

Culture Politics traces the history of indigenous land claims in Southeast Alaska. Based on three years of residence and over two decades of research and writing, Culture Politics lays out how Native land claims in Alaska came about, and why they have proven so divisive for many Alaska Native communities. Reframing and going beyond Dombrowski’s earlier book, Against Culture, the current volume looks in depth at the trials and tribulations of subsistence hunters and fishers in villages like Hydaburg, Kake, Klawock, and Hoonah. Each of these communities has faced the same onslaught of timber harvesting and the collapse of the local fishery. Some have grown as a result, while others have shrunk. And some have spawned radical Pentecostal churches that have taken a stance against Native culture. Reactions like these are surprising, more so when they are most stridently advocated by Natives themselves. This book describes why this is so, and traces these processes back to the Land Claims process itself.

Culture Politics is aimed at both popular and academic audiences. While the social and political processes it describes are complex, the language of the text is intended for ordinary adult readers. Those interested in Native American affairs, the history of Alaska, or the effect of environmental development on northern communities will find much to appreciate in this compelling, first-hand telling of life on the edge of America.
