by Kirk Dombrowski (Author, Editor), Kimberly Gocchi Carrasco (Editor), Contributors: Devan Crawford, Rochelle Dalla, Tonia Durden, Bridget Goosby, Tim Nelson, Jordan Soliz, Kimberly Tyler, Mindy Anderson-Knott, Virginia Chaidez, Jacob Cheadle

This volume of collected essays is a product of the 2015 Minority Health Disparities Initiative writing retreat at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The goal of UNL’s MHDI is to disseminate and translate the research of affiliated university faculty to our community partners and organizations, as part of a larger goal to address the needs of minority and underserved populations throughout the Central Plains. These essays discuss ongoing research on discrimination and stress, obesity prevention in rural areas, human trafficking, Native American health promotion, the health impacts of bi- and multi-racial identity, and the emerging field of community health workers.

About the Author

Kirk Dombrowski is the John Bruhn Professor of Sociology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. For the last 25 years he has been working on issues of social inequality and how small scale issues of family, hope, thought, and action interweave with larger question of industrial resource development and capital accumulation. He teaches undergraduate courses on how to think about things that don’t fit in…network analysis, marginal groups, new social movements. At the doctoral level he teaches courses in research methods, and core-social theory, with a focus on public health and health disparities. Since 2013 he is the Principal Investigator of the UNL REACH Lab – a research shop dedicated to Research, Evaluation, and Analysis for Community Health (reach.unl.edu) – and Director of UNL’s Minority Health Disparities Initiative (mhdi.unl.edu).
